Today’s data volume, variety, and velocity has made relational database nearly obsolete for handling certain types of workloads. But it’s also put incredible strain on regular NoSQL databases. The key is to find one that can deliver the infinite scale and high availability required to support high volume, web-scale applications in clustered environments. This white paper details the capabilities and uses case of an Active Everywhere database

IT is undergoing a significant transformation as businesses look to streamline costs and roll out a new class of cloud-based applications driven by a changing digital economy. The IT infrastructure as we know it today is not well equipped to improve on the cost structure for traditional workloads nor handle the velocity demands of a new generation of workloads where IT is a focal point for competitive differentiation. As one approach to address these changing demands of IT, vendors are bringing to market new solutions under a new category called “composable infrastructure”.

" One thing is clear: the old way of running IT just won’t work in the new business environment.Truth is, preparing your IT department (and your company) to be agile, cost-efficient, metrics-driven, and flexible will require a change in how you operate. To support new business processes, you would do well to turn to a converged system, like HP ConvergedSystem for Virtualization. In this paper, we look at the greatest challenges faced by IT departments, and how traditional configurations, processes, and organizations are poorly-equipped to handle today’s workplace. We discuss the benefits of converged systems that are engineered to handle virtualized workloads. Finally, we look at HP ConvergedSystem for Virtualization as a simple and effective way for businesses to optimize their data center infrastructure and processes to better meet business needs."

Compression algorithms reduce the number of bits needed to represent a set of data—the higher the compression ratio, the more space this particular data reduction technique saves. During our OLTP test, the Unity array achieved a compression ratio of 3.2-to-1 on the database volumes, whereas the 3PAR array averaged a 1.3-to-1 ratio. In our data mart loading test, the 3PAR achieved a ratio of 1.4-to-1 on the database volumes, whereas the Unity array got 1.3 to 1.

When your company’s work demands a new storage array, you have the opportunity to invest in a solution that can support demanding workloads simultaneously—such as online transaction processing (OLTP) and data mart loading. At Principled Technologies, we compared Dell EMC™ PowerEdge™ R930 servers1 with the Intel® Xeon® Processor Dell EMC Unity 400F All Flash storage array to HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen9 servers with the HPE 3PAR 8400 array in three hands-on tests to determine how well each solution could serve a company during these database-intensive tasks. Hyperconvergence has been receiving a tremendous amount of attention because it represents the next step in the evolution of IT resource delivery. This technology takes the idea of integrating compute, storage and networking that started with converged systems design and has improved on those architectures by adding deeper levels of abstraction and automation. Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) vendors promise simplified operation and the ability to quickly and easily expand capacity by deploying and launching additional modules; simplicity has been the key selling point for the HCI pioneers. As HCI ventures even deeper into the enterprise and cloud environments, the architectures will need to become more efficient, agile and adaptable to help IT professionals shoulder the burden of rapidly growing data sets and workloads. This report discusses the benefits of HCI and the enhancements that must be made to expand HCI deeper into the mainstream enterprise datacenter.

IBM's recently released DB2 version 11.1 for Linux, Unix and Windows (LUW) is a hybrid database that IBM says can handle transactional and analytic workloads thanks to its BLU Acceleration technology, which features an in-memory column store for analytical workloads that can scale across a massively parallel cluster.

DB2 is a proven database for handling the most demanding transactional workloads. But the trend as of late is to enable relational databases to handle analytic queries more efficiently by adding an inmemory column store alongside to aggregate data and provide faster results. IBM's BLU Acceleration technology does exactly that. While BLU isn't brand new, the ability to spread the column store across a massively parallel processing (MPP) cluster of up to 1,000 nodes is a new addition to the technology. That, along with simpler monthly pricing options and integration with dashDB data warehousing in the cloud, makes DB2 for LUW, a very versatile database.

A truly hybrid IT infrastructure should support any and all workload types, letting applications run optimally on their own natural footprints or environments, whether bare-metal servers, scale-up virtualization, Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), or Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), from either private or public clouds. It should not be a singular environment that (unsuccessfully) attempts to handle all types of workloads, nor should it consist of separate IT infrastructures that cannot communicate with each other. The Red Hat® portfolio provides the open hybrid IT fabric required to seamlessly enable both traditional (stateful) and new, agile, cloud-native (stateless) workloads.
